Survivors’ Education Law Enforcement Trust (SELECT)

The purpose of the SELECT program is to recognize the contribution made to our communities by law enforcement officers killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty. This program not only provides college scholarships, but also provides pertinent information as to what other methods of funding and/or benefits are available to the family members of these slain or disabled officers. In addition the SELECT program will be able to administer scholarships for any other police organization in the country.
Each year, a considerable number of officers are killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty while protecting their countries’ citizens. It is of interest to know that the average age of a slain officer is 39 years and that only 10% of deaths occur during the first five years of duty. Slain police officers have an average of 10 years of service. These statistics tell us that more officers that are killed have families than not and the IACP Foundation and all communities have a moral obligation to help the families of these brave law enforcement officers. As Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan said on September 26, 2005, in Ottawa, Canada, at an annual memorial service for peace officers who had died in the line of duty: "It is important that we reach out to the friends and families of those officers whom we have lost." This effort will provide many opportunities for businesses, charitable organizations and individuals to give back to those who protect us on a daily basis.
With the SELECT program, survivors are given a greater sense of security by knowing that the education of their family members is guaranteed.
