Chuck Smith
Board Member IACP

Chuck Smith is president and CEO of SBC West, overseeing the more than 43,000 employees who serve the company’s California and Nevada customers. He has held a wide range of senior executive positions for AT&T (formerly SBC and Pacific Bell) during his career, including stints in human resources, operations, and marketing.

Smith joined the company in 1967 after graduating from California State University at Los Angeles with a bachelor’s degree in social science and additional graduate course work. In 1985, he completed a special graduate program for executives at Carnegie Mellon University. In 2003, he received a Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa from Menlo College and in 2004 he received a Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Holy Names University.

Smith was named California State University Los Angeles Alumnus of the Year in 2004. He is a trustee at Menlo College, a member of the University of California President's Board on Science and Innovation, the University of California Health Services Advisory Committee, serves on the board of the University of California-Berkeley Extension Program, is vice chair of the board of the Center for Telecommunications Management at the University of Southern California, and is a University of Southern California Ambassador.

In 2005 Smith was named one of the 100 Most Important African-Americans in Technology by US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine. He serves on the NAACP National Board of Directors, as a trustee member of the NAACP National Special Contribution Fund, an executive advisor for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, corporate advisor to the Magic Johnson Foundation, board advisor for the Los Angeles Urban League’s Board of Directors, and is a member of the State of California’s Education Braintrust. From 1994-2003 he chaired the United Negro College Fund Walk-A-Thon in Los Angeles.

Smith serves on the boards of: The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, Southern California Leadership Council, National Board of the Boy Scouts of America, Boy Scouts of America-Mt. Diablo Silverado Council, March of Dimes-State of California Chapter, Executive Technology Centers, Committee on Jobs, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco YMCA CEOs for Kids, Alta Bates Summit CEO/Executive Health Care Forum, Los Angeles County Julian C. Dixon Institute for Cultural Studies, and Los Angeles YMCA Achievers Program. He is a member of the Veteran’s Corporation’s Advisory Board, the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Posse, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police Foundation. Smith was the chairperson for the 2005 March of Dimes WalkAmerica Campaign for the State of California and the 2004 March of Dimes WalkAmerica Campaign for Northern California. He also was a member of the 2004 Host Committee for the Los Angeles/ International Association Chiefs of Police Convention.

Smith is a native of Los Angeles. He and his wife, Beryl, maintain homes in both Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area and have two children.
